Inner Strength, IncFebruary 2002 Martial Arts and Memory Function
In the book, ‘Users Guide to the Brain’, Harvard professor John J. Ratey, M.D. notes that coordinated movement such as martial arts has both been linked to improved memory and brain function. Because memory and movement as being linked, new connections form in the brain. As new routines are introduced a greater number of connections are made in the brain. This produces a brain with a greater number of connections between it’s neurons and in effect, creates a better brain. Another study with Alzheimer patients and tai chi has show that tai chi practice can halt the progression of Alzheimer's. Studies with Parkinson’s patients participating in t’ai chi on a regular basis have shown a decrease in both mental and physical symptoms. So, add memory and clear thinking to the list of abilities and skills that actively participating a in a martial arts program can provide. It’s never to late to add a martial arts program to your life, and improve your health and mind |
